Different Types of Breakouts - What is Causing Yours? | BodyCo Skin

Breakouts, acne, irritation, redness, oily skin... these are all very common skin conditions, but there are many different types!

Here is to know roughly what category of 'breakouts' you are in!

Acne Vulgaris

The 'common' acne - the presence of blackheads, whiteheads, and other types of pimples on the skin. The most common spots for breakouts are the face, chest, shoulders, and back.

A hair follicle that has become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. It then can develop into bumps called whiteheads and blackheads.

Comedones that are open at the surface of the skin. They are filled with excess oil and dead skin cells. Blackheads do not equal dirt! The colour is a reflection from the light in the clogged hair follicle.

Comedones that stay closed at the surface of the skin. This happens when oil and skin cells prevent a clogged hair follicle from opening.

Comedones that become inflamed, forming small red or pink bumps on the skin. This type of pimple may be sensitive to the touch.

Another kind of inflamed pimple. They resemble a whitehead with a red ring around the bump. The bump is typically filled with white or yellow pus.

Hormonal Acne

During puberty, this may appear in the T-zone (forehead, nose and chin). Adult hormonal acne is usually lower in the face (cheeks and jawline). It is caused by an influx of hormones during; menstruation, menopause and other changes in hormones (also includes polycystic ovarian syndrome).

Stress Acne

Often, people will blame stress for their breakouts. Yes, it is important for your skin health to keep stress to a minimum, but stress in face causes a spike in hormones, causing breakouts.
